Dr. Maija Harkonen is Director of the Washington Program. She has taught courses on international relations, economic development, and comparative politics at Georgetown University, her alma mater, John Hopkins University, Moscow State Institute of International Relations and universities of applied sciences in Finland with focus on Russia, Eastern Europe and China. She also has a number of publications and invited presentations on security in Northern Europe, U.S.-Russian relations, and the Cold War. Prior to accepting the Director position, Dr. Harkonen was the executive director of the Center for the Study of Democracy at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Maija has years of experience in various leadership and management positions in academia and the private sector, where she has led numerous projects, participated in trade delegations, negotiated agreements, led international project development, raised funding and created teams for public-private partnerships.
